Feasting on Moderation

Finding the sweet spot between health and moderation

The holiday season is a time of merriment, indulgence, and for many of us invested in our longevity, a slew of health-conscious sacrifices.

Recently, a meme I shared on social media sparked a conversation about these sacrifices; it highlighted the sacrifices I chose to make over the holidays for the sake of longevity. The array of responses was a mix of sympathy, advice to relax, and even some pointed accusations of mental illness and eating disorders.

The discourse wasn't intended to pass judgment but to stir a discussion on the personal trade-offs we're willing to make during festive times. What constitutes acceptable indulgence? For me, this holiday season involved a departure from my usual rigid life of longevity, savoring pudding and sipping a cocktail or two — all in moderation, without the dreaded after-effects of overindulgence.

My longevity journey is one of balance. I don't aspire to extreme abstention declaring a never again attitude to anything and embedding my quest for a longer life in my identity. But after years of living somewhat with abandon, I now find joy in temperance, sacrificing immediate gratifications for my long-term health. Yet, this does not mean I'll pass up on the culinary delights when in Italy next, saying no to pizza, wine, and Tiramisu. The thought of skipping authentic pizza and wine while in Italy seems almost sacrilegious; these experiences are rare and add a whole lot of meaning and give richness to my life and that makes me happy.

So, where do we draw the line? Restricting 'the bad stuff' is crucial for most of us, given our tendencies to overindulge to our long-term detriment. However, I also hear defiant proclamations from friends and family who declare they would choose a shorter, pleasure-filled life of indulgence over a longer life marked by what they perceive as a monotonous existence, even if it's with longevity in mind.

The intersection of happiness and health is intricate. Does forsaking the temporary euphoria of festive indulgences lead to a healthier, perhaps longer life? Conversely, does the relentless pursuit of health compromise the joy and spontaneity that makes life vibrant? The answers aren't straightforward and are deeply personal.

What's clear is that the path to longevity isn't just about food or exercise; it's about finding a sustainable lifestyle that brings joy and health in equal measures. It's about seeking harmony between the pleasures of the present and the promises of the future.

The happiness derived from life's indulgences and the contentment found in healthy living aren't mutually exclusive. It's possible to find a middle ground — a place where cannoli and cocktails coexist with conscious choices and a commitment to well-being.

Ultimately, longevity may not be solely about the length of life but its quality. The pursuit of happiness, within the boundaries of health, might indeed be the saving grace we all seek. After all, what is life without a taste of the richness it offers?

MICRO-DOSES

Researchers reverse cellular aging, extending mice's lives by 109%. They've found a chemical method to reverse cellular aging, potentially leading to whole-body rejuvenation. In the study, mice with accelerated aging were treated with Yamanaka factors, known for promoting cell health.

Reducing calorie intake by just 25% can slow biological aging by 3%, research suggests This study, which used DNA methylation as a measure of aging, suggests that even a modest reduction in calorie intake can have significant effects on the aging process.

The right diet can add 10 years to your life a recent study demonstrates. The research suggests that a diet high in whole grains and nuts, and low in sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meats, can extend life expectancy by up to a decade, even when dietary changes are made later in life.

Elon on Longevity….

Musk says he is not afraid of death

Prolonging human lifespans could result in what he terms the "asphyxiation of society." In his view, an extended human lifespan might lead to the persistence of outdated ideas, impeding societal progress.

IN THE HOOD: STORIES FROM OUR COMMUNITY

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Marcel from France

How old are you?

I'm 63 years old

What is your death number (The ideal age you will die)?

I've recently thought seriously about this for the first time. I think I always thought I would be doomed by 75 like my mother but now I'm aiming for a healthy and fulfilling life well beyond 90.

Can you share a specific turning point or realization that motivated you to prioritize your health and well-being?

My life took a profound turn when I was diagnosed with breast cancer 4 years ago, it was my wake-up call that made me reevaluate my choices. I realized that I needed to take charge of my health, especially after a lifetime of struggling with obesity.

What are the greatest challenges you face to a long life?

My greatest challenge has been changing my mindset from not really caring about my health and thinking, “that what would be would be”, to taking control and thinking about a new way of living.

What diet/style of eating works for you?

Now I eat a Mediterranean plant-based diet focusing on whole foods and vegetables, which has not only helped me manage my weight but also helped me feel so much better.

What do you do for physical fitness?

For the first time in my life, I make daily exercise. I engage in jogging and spend ample time gardening. Making exercise a habit has helped me feel the best I can remember in my life.

Do you have a supplement stack?

I've started to explore the world of supplements. Mine includes a protein supplement, essential vitamins for my overall health, and red yeast rice to lower high blood lipids. I find it all quite confusing, but use more supplements when I understand them better.

What other things do you do for longevity?

I recently moved from the city to the countryside and feel the move closer to nature has been beneficial for my overall health and a good decision for longevity.

What has had the biggest impact on your longevity to date?

Exercise without question

What role does mental health play in your overall approach to longevity, and how do you prioritize it?

Mental health is something I'm planning to incorporate more into my routine. While I haven't focused on it so much yet, I recognize its importance.

How do you balance the social aspects of life with your longevity goals?

My social life hasn't changed drastically, as my friends have always encouraged me to eat better and look after myself. Now, I find myself more aligned with how they live.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their journey toward a longer and healthier life?

Start early, don't wait until ill-health catches up with you like I did. Begin with small steps that resonates with you and exercise daily.

DE-MYSTIFYING: SAUNA

Beyond the Sweat

Saunas have been a cornerstone of wellness routines across various cultures for centuries, and today, they are celebrated not just for their relaxation benefits but also for their health-boosting potential. The evolving science behind sauna use has led to an intriguing debate about the efficacy of different types of saunas, particularly dry versus infrared, and their role in stimulating heat shock proteins (HSPs) and potentially boosting testosterone levels.

Types of Saunas: Dry vs. Infrared

The two primary types of saunas under debate are dry and infrared saunas:

  • Dry Saunas: These traditional saunas use dry heat, often generated by a stove or heater, and are characterized by high temperatures and low humidity. They are renowned for inducing intense sweating and a deep sense of relaxation.

  • Infrared Saunas: A more modern innovation, infrared saunas use infrared panels to directly heat the body instead of the air around it. They operate at lower temperatures compared to dry saunas, which some find more comfortable.

The Controversy: Which is Better?

The debate between dry and infrared saunas hinges on several factors:

  • Heat Penetration: Infrared saunas are said to penetrate deeper into the body, potentially offering more significant muscle relaxation and detoxification benefits.

  • Temperature Tolerance: Dry saunas have higher temperatures, which some people find more effective for intense sweating and detoxification, while others prefer the gentler heat of infrared saunas.

  • Health Benefits: Both sauna types are associated with various health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, relaxation, and detoxification. However, the intensity and nature of these benefits can vary based on the type of sauna and individual user experience.

Heat Shock Proteins and Sauna Use

Regardless of the type, sauna use has been linked to the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs). These proteins play a vital role in cellular protection and repair, and their increased production is one of the key health benefits associated with sauna use. By helping in the maintenance and repair of damaged proteins, HSPs contribute significantly to cellular health and resilience.

Saunas and Testosterone Enhancement

Emerging research suggests a potential link between regular sauna use and increased testosterone levels. The heat stress from sauna sessions is believed to stimulate the production of HSPs, which in turn could influence hormonal balance and testosterone production. This area of research is particularly exciting, though it's worth noting that more comprehensive studies are needed to fully understand and validate these findings.

Conclusion: A Fusion of Ancient Practice and Modern Science

Saunas, whether dry or infrared, represent more than just a way to unwind. They embody the intersection of ancient wellness practices with cutting-edge scientific research, offering a range of potential health benefits from improved cardiovascular health to enhanced cellular resilience through HSPs, and possibly even hormonal balance and testosterone enhancement. As we continue to explore and understand these benefits, saunas remain a testament to our ongoing quest for health and longevity, a practice steeped in tradition yet ever-evolving in the light of modern science.

JAIL BREAK:  AGE DEFYING HUMANS BREAKING FREE FROM AGING

THIS WEEK: Mike Millen 70

Mike Millen, known as Britain's fittest grandfather, presents an inspiring example of maintaining fitness and embracing a healthy lifestyle into his later years. At 70 years old, he shares that the secret to staying in shape is consistency, likening it to the regular habit of brushing teeth. Millen has a unique approach to fitness, preferring outdoor workouts to conventional gym sessions. He finds variety and challenge in training outdoors, enjoying the changing weather and seasons and utilizing natural elements like logs, boulders, and trees in his exercises.

Millen incorporates cold showers into his routine, taking them outside in his garden all year round, citing benefits such as a boost to the immune system and improved well-being. His training style doesn't focus on conventional gym benchmarks like personal bests in lifting weights. Instead, he emphasizes fun and variation in his workouts, incorporating calisthenics movements like pull-ups and dips, experimenting with different holds and positions rather than focusing on numbers.

His advice to younger people centers on training for longevity, making fitness enjoyable, and embracing variation. He encourages people to explore the outdoors for their workouts, finding new places to walk and train, and to appreciate the fresh air and natural world. Millen's philosophy is about making fitness a fun and integral part of life, a mindset that he also brings to his virtual training sessions on the LIVENow platform.
